What is sleep disordered breathing?

It is restricted or improper breathing at night. It is often a result of improper jaw development or positioning. Over the course of months or years, SBD can have dire consequences for a child’s health.

What Is Healthy Start?

Healthy Start is a custom treatment overseen by a dentist or orthodontist that aids the development of a child’s teeth and jaw, thus addressing anatomical issues that contribute to SBD. Instead of using braces, which many children find to be uncomfortable, it uses removable orthodontic appliances that are worn only at night (or as otherwise directed). Most children adapt quite quickly to popping their appliance in their mouth every evening after they get ready for bed.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Depending on the age when your child begins Healthy Start, they may go through three phases of treatment:  

• Habit correction. This uses an appliance to stop damaging habits like thumb sucking.

• Second phase. The second phase appliance helps the incoming teeth to emerge into their proper places. It also aids correct development and positioning of the jaw.

• Final phase. The final phase begins when your child has at least four permanent teeth. The appliance guides proper development of your child’s permanent smile.
